Middle School Elective · Grades 7–8
Before we build anything, we learn to see.
Week 02 · Inspiration & Design Thinking · Fall CohortFaith and craft belong together here. Every class hour opens anchored in the Word, and the values — wisdom, integrity, service, diligence, humility — lead the work.
Everything the Agency does starts with noticing — problems in your life, your family's, your friends'. Your sketchbook is where noticing becomes real: problems, sketches, ideas, all of it. It's your personal backlog — every founder has one.
One student's noticed problem became an idea: laces that tie themselves. That's the spark — and a spark earns an inspiration dive. So we went where designers share their best work, searched "sneakers," picked the designs we loved, and asked the designer's question: why does this work?
What does your eye see first, second, third? That order was chosen.
Colors carry feeling and meaning — and point at a person.
Fonts have voices. Loud, elegant, playful, serious — which is speaking?
Crowded feels cheap. Room to breathe feels considered.
What's left empty is a decision too — often the most confident one.
Every choice above points at someone. Who is this design for?
Every design decision is a decision. Once you can name them, you can make them — and later, you can direct AI to make them, because you'll know what good looks like.
You read color, type, and styling — and named the audience. Designs aimed at him and designs aimed at her make different choices, and you spotted them.
You judged whether the craft justified a premium price for the sneakers — and said why or why not. That's taste, out loud.
Keep observing this week — problems at home, at co-op, in the neighborhood. Capture them. Sketch them. Next class: pods form, pods get names, and you pitch your best problems to your team.
